Job Purpose
Under the direction of the Manager, Safety and Quality Systems the SMS Investigator is responsible to conduct investigations with respect to Flight Operations SMS reports and to assist in conducting risk assessments and implementing, tracking, and validating the effectiveness of corrective actions plans. This position ensures that all operations are conducted in compliance with Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs).
Primary Responsibilities
- Conduct investigations of reports submitted with respect to occurrence, hazard, incident, and accident in accordance with the safety policy and procedures manuals.
- Obtain and review evidence in support of the investigation which may include but is not limited to:
- Employee interviews.
- Air traffic control recordings.
- Weather data.
- Aircraft maintenance history.
- Ensure investigative actions are accurately documented in the company's SMS.
- Implement, recommend, track, and verify the effectiveness of corrective action plans.
- Notify the Director of Flight Operations or delegate(s) immediately if, during the investigation, a regulatory non-compliance is discovered.
- Assist with and/or conduct risk assessments.
- Liaise with maintenance and flight operations quality assurance personnel as required.
- Participate in data collection and data analysis, including the identification of trends.
- Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, standards, and regulations.
- Monitor Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System (CADORS) and industry reports to identify potential hazards and/or possible exposure to risks within the organization.
- Conduct internal audit follow-up for moderate and high-risk corrective action plans (CAPS) to ensure appropriate mitigation strategies have been achieved.
- Assist third-party auditors as required.
- Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position require completion of an aviation or technical diploma with formal training related to accident and incident investigations and root cause analysis. A minimum of three years' airline "below-the-wing" experience, i.e., flight operations, technical operations, inflight and/or airports, is required. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
Skills, knowledge, and abilities include:
- Exceptional verbal and written communication and presentation skills and ability to communicate effectively to all internal and external stakeholders.
- Sound relationship building skills and ability to manage expectations of a diverse stakeholder group.
- Demonstrated experience with company online reporting systems.
- Knowledge of CARs with respect to airline operations, airworthiness, and safety management.
- Strong understanding of safety management principles and practices relating to:
- Operational risk management.
- Safety culture.
- Human and organizational factors analysis.
- Continuous improvement.
- Sound problem solving, decision-making, analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
- Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects and tasks and execute effectively and in a timely manner.

- Proficient in utilizing Microsoft Office applications and company specific software.
